| 12th August 2010A heavenly call to simple living! Is a call to give God everything except what we need to simply live on.
Jesus tells the story of the rich farmer in Luke 12:13-21, in the story Jesus calls the man a "fool". Why? Because when his fields produced abundantly more than he really needed to live on, he tore down his perfectly good barns to build bigger barns so that he could sit back and just take life easy!
What should he have done with God given surplus? Verse 33 tells us: "Sell your possessions and give to the needy". Instead of increasing his own ease and security, he should have used his possessions to alleviate the suffering of others.
Luke goes on to say in verse 21: "So is the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God". The real meaning of being rich towards God is found in Luke 12:33: "Provide yourself with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail".
How do we lay up those treasures in heaven? Simple: Give to the poor & needy. There is a simple test you can take to know if you are being rich towards God, compare how much you give with how much you keep.
There is a call from Heaven to us as a church to Simple Living, releasing us into the joy of Sacrificial Giving, and the knowledge we are storing up Treasures in Heaven.
I encourage us all to begin living a simpler lifestyle, allowing us to set aside monies on a regular basis, so that, when we take up an offering for the poor or to realise our vision as a local church, we're all ready to give. In future, we intend taking up two offerings a year, one in March and one in July.
Let me leave you with the words of John Wesley who encourages us to: "Make as much as you can, save as much as you can and give as much as you can". |
![]() | 28th June 2010Healing On The Streets comes to DorchesterIt is with great excitement and faith that we go out on the streets of Dorchester on Saturday the 3rd of July with the love of Jesus. What a privilege!
Please pray for all involved. Thanks Gary |
![]() | 16th March 2010Prayer for RevivalIt’s a fact that the strength – and growth – of a church is directly proportional to the prayer of its members. This is confirmed in the excellent book “Prayer: The Key to Revival” by Paul Yonghi-Cho, the founding pastor of the biggest church in the world in Seoul, Korea, a church with more than 1 million active members. After reading this book, it became obvious that we had to encourage more prayer in our church – particularly corporate prayer. To this end, we started an early-morning prayer group on Thursdays at the church office. This began in late 2008, and is still going well. There are a number of hardy souls that regularly overcome the temptations of snuggling under their duvets for an extra hour or two, and brave all sorts of weather, in order to pray for Revival. We can only encourage more people to give up a small amount of their early morning to see souls added to the Body of Christ. The sacrifice is small, but the reward is great! |
